Why PROAC Started
Greetings! It seems like a lifetime ago starting out as a bright-eyed young man of 26 when I was approached with this awesome new opportunity called Indoor Air Quality. I became obsessed with learning about Sick Building Syndrome, ventilation, water damage, dirty ducts, etc. From working in the field for several years to making sales and then managing projects, I was blessed to experience the industry from the ground up. Unfortunately, that meant experiencing working for a self-centered boss and owner who left me lying in a hospital emergency room 2 days before Christmas, with a broken sacrum at the lower end of my back. It happens to be the tilted square bone below the vertebrae but above the tailbone. I can’t begin to tell you my thoughts as I wondered how I would get home from the jobsite to my car at work and back home to my wife who just birthed our firstborn son weeks earlier. I couldn’t call her for help because we only owned one car and I didn’t want her to know I had fallen off a ladder, was now in the hospital and not knowing how I would get home to her and our son. After all, I could not move my legs while laying on the floor nor when taken by ambulance to the hospital.
After calling my boss and hearing that no one could come and help me because they were closing for the Holiday, my mind raced for answers. Long story short, with the grace of God I was able to pull myself off the gurney, refuse medical treatment, call my customer for a ride (how embarrassing) and gather up all my tools and equipment at the jobsite. I then drove a few miles to the county courthouse near to where I was working to shock their cooling tower with 10 gallons of biocide. That’s right, while in shock I was dead set on completing my work that day albeit not knowing I had broken my back! I made it home 90 minutes after that, now extremely sore and stiff but relieved to be with my family once again. Of course I made calls to my doctor who scheduled Xrays and treatment on Christmas Eve. When my boss called me after Christmas to see why I hadn’t come to work, I proceeded to his office, stood there and turned around to drop my pants low enough that he could see the pure black bruise that had developed to the size of a softball on my lower back. I told him I may need a few days off!
I do not recommend that anyone react how I had done and I don’t wish my experience for anyone! But looking back, I learned not simply about the indoor environmental industry which would become my career field, but I was learning how to treat people and keep commitments. I was being groomed to start and grow a thriving and successful company!
Thank you for allowing me to share and thank you for your business!
