School Summer Maintenance & Cleaning List
Whether you manage the maintenance and cleaning for a local public school, or you manage the maintenance for a large university, there are areas that need to be taken care of over the summer months. This checklist is to assist you in the cleaning and management of your educational building maintenance.
1. General School Cleaning
This first item to check off in your cleaning and maintenance list is what we would call the obvious area of cleaning. From taking out the trash to making sure the floors are vacuumed and swept. Having this complete will make all of the more advanced cleaning and maintenance items on this checklist.
2. Kitchen Hood Cleaning In The Cafeteria
Your school’s cafeteria has cooked a wide range of food over the school year, and build up occurs. Make sure your kitchen hood and kitchen equipment is cleaned and ready to be used daily. Cleaning your kitchen equipment will help prevent fires. Additionally, inspect the equipment to make sure fans aren’t short circuiting or that the ductwork is intact.
3. School Carpet Cleaning & Floor Scrubbing
The summer is the perfect opportunity to have your carpet deep cleaned and the hard floor scrubbed or repaired. Using a floor scrubber will gloss over any scratches or surface scuffs preparing the entire school or university for the upcoming year.
4. Duct Cleaning & Maintenance
The summertime is one of the best times to have your ductwork cleaned. Not only can dust and dirt build up in your school’s ductwork, but these areas that have moisture buildup can be a breeding ground for mold, toxins and bacteria. Annual cleaning of your ductwork can prevent health code violations and issues in your school.
5. Have Your University’s Cooling Tower Maintained Or Refurbished
Cooling towers are vital to the functionality of your school’s air conditioning. When you maintain your cooling tower, it will help it last longer as well as operate more efficiently, saving your school on utility costs. If your cooling tower needs to be refurbished, now is the perfect time to have it refurbished.
6. HVAC Cleaning & Maintenance
Similar to your cooling tower, your HVAC systems should be maintained and cleaned to ensure it is operating at maximum efficiency. Keeping your HVAC system operational is vital for the upcoming school year. Educational institutions that maintain their HVAC system will save money and keep their school operating.
7. Grounds Maintenance & Construction
Without students walking around the grounds, now is the perfect time to do sidewalk repair, landscaping, and grounds work that requires more than the regular maintenance. Take advantage of the empty summer campus to prepare your school grounds for next year.
8. Test Your School’s Air Quality
Many schools overlook their air quality until it is too late. Checking the air quality of your building or your older university buildings can root out mold issues and help perform preventative maintenance that will allow your campus buildings to last longer. Many times an air quality test will indicate your ducts need to be cleaned or an area of standing water in your basement needs to be appropriately cleaned and maintenance.
9. Test Your School’s Water Quality
Water quality is often overlooked as well. Testing your water quality can point out plumbing issues that need to be repaired or filters that need to be changed. Make sure your school’s plumbing is ready for the thousands of gallons of water it will go through in the next school year.
10. Take Stock Of The School’s Inventory
Before the summer is over, make sure you have all the supplies you need to maintain the school throughout the following school year. This will keep your maintenance team from having downtime or being unable to fix certain problems.
11. Maintenance Of School Vehicles & Machinery
Typically school vehicles and machinery need to be maintained at the beginning and end of the summer. Due to both of them being utilized a lot over the summer, you want your vehicles to operate without issue.
12. Maintenance Boiler Room, Electrical Room, & Mechanical Room
We could create an entirely separate checklist for each of these rooms. There is a lot of work to be done over the summer. Overlooking the core areas that keep your school operating would be a mistake. Make sure these areas are maintained and operational for the next year.
13. Repair, Refurbish, Or Replace Old HVAC Systems
In colleges and universities that have old HVAC systems, the summer is an effective time to take stock of your HVAC systems. There are typically multiple HVAC systems on larger college campuses. Make sure each is operational and able to function for the entire year.
